I bought a bottle of this as it was on special offer at £3.69. It has a very pleasant and easy-drinking sweetness on the palate with a striking, warm aftertaste. The red fruit flavours are prominent and it has a woody, late autumn in the outdoors kind of bouquet. I wouldn't have described the taste as oaky (which may be a good thing or a bad thing depending on your personal preference). I happen to prefer the oaky taste in red wines; Australian Shiraz is good for that but I still enjoyed this one.
Incidentally for a really good deep smoky red with that oak cask roundedness try Pitchfork Shiraz; however you need to be on an NXEC train to do that! I don't know of anywhere else that sells it.

Well - I mostly like a nice Rioja if I'm going for a red, and for whites, I tend to go for Pinot Grigios or a lighter Frascati. Never the less - your comments are intriguing - especially the info about the Pitchfork Shiraz.....

This week I have mostly been drinking... Hardy's Bankside 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon (Australian). When I saw it on the shelf, at first glance I thought it said Hardy's Backside and wondered if connoisseurs would describe it as a cheeky wine ;D it is in fact a very smooth, rich and full bodied red, just the sort I like!

Totally agree about the Hardy's Bankside. Haven't seen it since I was buying it 3 for a tenner out of Threshers - they don't appear to sell it anymore. Luckily, I have one bottle of the 2005 left - ah yes, a fine vintage! I love wine and whilst it's nice to get a good bottle, it's even better to get a bargain.
Lidls have a surprising amount of reserve wines which are actually great for the price - especially if you like a Rioja (Muz). If you like champagne, Veuve Clicquot gives the best bang for your buck (all a matter of opinion of course) of the mid priced range. This always comes in around £30 - £40 quid, depending on offers & excluding case deals/internet. Upscaling to the higher end of bubbly is the one and only Krug. I only mention these because I have yet to find anywhere cheaper than Valvona & Crolla, Elm Row to sell these. £28 for Veuve & £95 for Krug - nowhere else is selling Krug for less than £120.
May seem daft/extravagant to some readers that anyone contemplate spending amounts like this on booze. Just wanted to put it out there for those who enjoy this kind of thing, or alternatively, those who want to treat themselves following pay-off day!

I've noticed that Lidl get some great bargains in the wine department. The bottle of Hardy's Bankside I had came from Morrisons, I'm 99% sure anyway; if not then it would have been Sainsbury's.

On the subject of soft drinks- does anyone remember Cresta? My Gran used to work in Martins the Bakers and we always got a bottle of Cresta and a Snowball when we went to visit her at work. I can't really remember what it tasted like but it was in a small plastic bottle with a polar bear on the front. ( I think) It must have tasted ok at the time as I remember drinking more that one of them. But it did leave a terrible thick lining of some sort in your mouth, yuk!! Anyway see you all tomorrow for the final do!!!

I remember Cresta - and the advert with the polar bear in shades goin "it's fizzy man". Think you got different flavours. Anyone remember Fresca? Kids thought it was vile but I liked it - just to be different. Fizzy grapefruit I think. Then Wotsits tried to introduce fruit flavour Wotsits - it was just wrong but I insisted they were great, again, just to gross the other kids out hee hee!

I don't know, I go to Inverness for a week and a perfectly respectable alcohol thread gets hijacked! I have never heard of Cresta or Fresca but I remember Snowballs. ... That post is referring to the marshmallow kind of snowball isn't it, not the Advocaat kind. this 125 has a one track mind. Oh well I remember that kind of snowball too! Fruit flavour Wotsits? jings crivvens help ma boab! I'd rather eat the vomit flavoured jelly beans they put in the special Harry Potter themed packs. I presume Parmesan cheese was somehow involved in creating that little gimmick I am currently drinking Inycon Estate Sicilian Shiraz. Oak aged. It is very mellow and rounded, just the way I like. Fanta makes me cough but I love Irn Bru

Sorry, but the snowball I was referring to was the sponge kind- which was two halves sandwiched together with jam, covered in coconut, and shaped like a snowball. You can still buy them in any bakers. Or supermarkets, where you can also buy wine! which is what you were talking about to start with before someone mentioned fanta!! In fact I think I'll just go and open a bottle of bud.
I've just checked the best before date on the bottle - it's 5/8/08. oh well it's not going to kill me. cheers!!

Long may this thread continue! ;D I'll just add that I liked Cresta - with the polar bear with shades on saying "It's frothy man!" - but will add my favourite drinks as a kid were probably Creamola Foam, and Globe bottles of pop - the type you got a deposit for... (Every Saturday morning my pal and I would go down to the local garage - go round the back where they rather foolishly put the retuned empties, select a few each, take them inside and get our deposit money which we'd then spend on sweets! Master criminals at such a young age!)

I was just starting school when decimalisation came in so I didn't know much about money in 1971. Oh, and continuing on the subject of snowballs. I saw mini snowballs in Greggs yesterday, they were so cute! And then in the Store( that's Scotmid to the youngsters) this afternoon you'll never believe I saw Chocolate( sponge) snowballs. What will they think of next!!?some Cabernet Sauvignon called Harvey's Backside, or should that be Hardy's Bankside! hehe

The snowballs I remember (apart from the fluffy mallow variety) were two halves of a kinda hard sponge with a caramel/toffee paste stuff in them - a bit like set butter icing. Used to get boxes of 4. As for the Store, I often refer to it as Scrotemid - doesn't offend the staff as none of them speak English anyway. Maybe it's their own language of Scroteish! On the up side, their fruits nicer than Tesco. Wine's cheaper too but that's cos my Tesco on Leith Walk is an express store. In short , we girls like hard balls, firm young fruits and a fine vintage that won't get us on our Banksides!

I used to call it Scotmidden It is the only place I know where one can buy citrus vodka. I also used to buy Old Inverness whisky there. I do remember Cremola Foam, it was great stuff! If on the other hand I want something to knock me on my bankside I suppose I'll just try a treadmill then! just kidding xx

Creamola foam was great then, like Texan Bars, but I am sure it wouldn't be the same now. I love as kids bags of sweets by the quarter Soor Plooms, sweet peanuts etc.
