Ist off I should lay my cards on the table - I am a huge Lou Reed fan. Being fairly anal (I alphabetise my albums, there I've said it) it was fairly easy to ascertain that I have 47 Lou Reed/Velvet Underground related albums on vinyl/CD. Having said that I haven't bought the last 3 or 4 as they are pretty poor and the 3 or 4 running up to that aren't exactly classics either. proof I hope that I am not uncritical of the great man. I say great man - he is of course the grumpiest possibly most unpleasant man in rock.
The Album Berlin from 1973 is basically a song cycle based around two doomed junkies in the shadow of the Berlin Wall. A perfect scenario for a jolly night out I think you'll agree.
Armed with a an orchestra, childrens choir and a superb array of talent in his backing band including original guitarist (and Alice Cooper Band stalwart) Steve Hunter. Steve Hunter appears to have gone blind, testament to the fact that he can play the blues (well it worked For Blind Lemon Jefferson and a bunch of other classic bluesmen).
What transpired was basically one of the finest concerts I have ever had the pleasure to witness with a few "goosebump" moments particularly during extended work outs on The Kids and Sad Song.
I think everyone expected that he would play Berlin in it's entirety and then make a quick getaway however the band came back on and played a three song encore which would suggest that the grumpy old git enjoyed himself as much as I did.
