As per Muz' request, I'm taking this one up in a new thread. I am so glad someone else shares my opinion as to how absolutely fantastic this film is; anyone who worked with me in my early days at the DBC and has seen the recent contributions to the My Wife / My Dead Wife thread will have been chuckling to themselves just waiting for me to see that post Event Horizon is in a class of its own. Its psychological impact is huge. I saw it nine times in three cities at the cinema and came out of it the first time absolutely dazed. The camera work flows so seamlessly and there's just the right amount of humour to balance the deep horror and make the characters real. The concept behind it is darkly thought provoking and there is also an excellent novelisation of it by Steven E McDonald which is true to the plot but goes into more depth about the characters, their feelings and motivations. The novel was very difficult to track down even at the time the movie was first out but it may be possible to get it from the likes of Amazon, to which I didn't have access at the time. Ave Atque Vale!

Yep - I like the movie a lot, and have the DVD. I always thought of it as a bit like Hellraiser in space! ;D I won't go into further detail as it might become a spoiler.... I found this online when trying to locate a picture of the DVD cover! www.moviebits.co.uk/productview.php?id=001479 Bit pricey though!

Hellraiser In Space indeed. Except that's Hellraiser IV - Bloodline which was set in a spacestation (I suspect that that is where they got the idea for Jason X). I have no idea if the whole film was set in a space station as it was so appalling I didn't stick with it and puts Hellraiser 4 into the other worst film thread - although the idea of Pinhead trying to fit a space helmet on his noggin amuses me (although I'm pretty sure that scene wouldn't have been in the film!)
Event Horizon was.... alright I suppose. Pseudo religious/scientific mumbo jumbo that doesn't stand up to any kind of close scrutiny (unlike Hellraiser which is a true story based on a very good autobiography by Jonathon Dimbleby). It is at least the one semi watchable film that Paul Anderson has made.

;D good point re Pinhead and his space helmet, he'd need a specially adapted colander!

Naw, easily any of the Lords of The Rings beats that: The best Sci-Fi is Alien, Comedy is Life of Brian

I have many favourites, so it has been difficult to single out any particular ones.
Here are two of them : Restless Natives - the Clown and the Wolfman hijacking bus tours in the highlands...
Another one is Chariots of Fire - a film about one of my heroes, Eric Liddell.

I am big fan of the Matrix trilogy too, the quasi religious / political aspect with it leaning towards the classics, But like anything with a good story like "O'Brother where art thou", which again based on the Homer's (not simpson) The Iilyad.
