Many thanks to web tech Noodle for sussing this out. 
Anyone can add pictures to their posts. It may take a bit of practice but soon it becomes easy enough to do.
You must be logged in and either starting a new thread or using the full reply function (not quick reply).
Above the smileys theres a set of function buttons - the one you need to click is the button underneath the S.
If you click this, you then get "{img}{img}" appearing.
All you have to then do is paste the address of the picture you wish to display between the two {img)'s - eg. "{img}http://www.strangecosmos.com/images/content/108500.jpg{/img}"
If I now actually do this - you should get a picture of Kev's attack dog.
Make use of the preview button before posting - and you'll know if you've got it right first. Good luck!
