Well - my pal Graeme and myself continued our travel jaunts this Saturday by going down the A1 to Holy Isle and stopping off in Lindisfarne, before scooting back up to Edinburgh via Coldstream (which was a far better road than the A1 for scenery). Unfortunately there was no fish suppers - and we even had a job getting some mead! Having said all that - it was a top wee trip of about 150 miles all round, and we manage to avoid the rainy weather system coming up from England. The main point of this trip was to test the in-ear radio system we have for the trip up north, as one of the inconveniences of travelling with your mates on bikes is that you cannot easily communicate. This was pretty succesful, and while you can't really chat to each other due to wind noise, it's good enough for stuff like "Stop at the next petrol station" or "Look out! - speed camera!" ;D Next trip will hopefully be up to Arbroath for some smokeys - so anyone with knowledge about that is welcome to post some tips... Here's some photos of the crossing to Holy Isle which was an amazing thing to see - apparently it gets covered by the sea at high tide....

Getting closer to the original and best fish supper in Newbiggin-by-the-Sea too! Despite growing up in Northumberland I was 21 before I managed a trip to Holy Island. It is true about the causeway being tidal. Every year several people take chances and try to cross outwith the safe crossing times, which vary according to the tides and are published in the local press. Every so often there will be a news item in the papers about people having to be rescued from the refuge points. Interesting place with quite a unique atmosphere and lots of history.

PS Re your Arbroath Smokies... www.arbroathsmokies.net/faq.phpYou may also spot the legendary Arbroath street name of Braicks Wynd. Imagine suddenly noticing that on your screen whilst taking a phone call!
